Trataka Meditation to Enhance Focus, Mind Power and Vision

Trataka is a meditation technique that involves focusing the eyes on a single point, such as a candle flame, a black dot on a wall, or even one’s own reflection in a mirror, for extended periods without blinking. How to Practice Trataka

  • Choose Your Focus Point: Common choices include a flame, a black dot on a wall, or one’s own reflection in mirror. Early Rising Sun can also be used for practice.
  • Duration: Beginners should start with 1 to 2 minutes, gradually increasing to 5 to 10 minutes for general purposes. For spiritual purposes or those with insomnia, 10 to 15 minutes before sleeping is recommended.
  • Sequence: Trataka is best practiced after asanas, pranayamas, mudras, and bandhas to steady the body and mind 1.

Lot of research has been done and it shows positive outcomes of doing Trataka. One study indicated a positive impact of the Trataka session, indicating enhanced working memory, spatial memory, and spatial attention among the subjects compared to the baseline and eye exercise sessions. Thus, Trataka could be used to improve memory and attention in young adults.
