In today’s spiritual landscape, terms like affirmations and manifestation are everywhere. They promise instant transformation and quick results. While they can have their place, they are often misunderstood and misused – leading many seekers to get stuck in surface-level practices rather than progressing into deeper spiritual work.
This article explores why these concepts, though popular, can be both helpful and limiting – and why the path of real growth requires moving beyond them.
Affirmations: Kindergarten Spirituality
Affirmations are like kindergarten for spirituality – they have value, but they’re only the very first step.
They can be extremely helpful for people stuck in loops of negative thinking. Positive thoughts can loosen the mental knots that block us from seeing what is actually possible. In that sense, affirmations can help open the door to growth.
But beyond that, they can become counterproductive. If you have to repeat a statement over and over, it usually means you don’t believe it. Repeating “I am abundant” when you don’t feel abundant is simply layering another belief over an old one.
Spirituality at its core is about truth – and about releasing fixed patterns and belief systems, not replacing one belief with another. Even lofty concepts like “everything is destined” are still beliefs. They exist on the plane of the mind and within the field of duality.
The deeper journey is about suspending all concepts entirely. This takes time. Until you reach that point, you can choose the beliefs that serve you best – but remember, every belief will eventually limit you.
Manifestation: Reality vs. Hype
The modern manifestation movement often sells an illusion: that you can control reality to the point of creating anything you want. If this were truly possible, such people would also be capable of conjuring gold out of thin air.
What’s really possible through manifestation is not “creating” in the magical sense, but aligning so deeply with life that you stop blocking your highest potential.
Think of it like this: life has a blueprint for you – your highest reality. But you resist it, get stuck in mental battles, and settle for less. It’s like getting a dream job and then starting a pointless fight with the security guard at the entrance. Eventually, you’re escorted out before even stepping inside.
True “manifestation” is more like a seed growing to its fullest capacity. Some seeds have ideal conditions and grow to 200 feet. Others grow in cracks of concrete and only reach a few inches. Your role is to give yourself the best conditions possible.
In rare cases, with years of disciplined spiritual practice (sadhana), your ichha shakti (willpower) grows. This may give you more actual choices in life – but by then, your desires will naturally align with the greater plan. Even then, choice brings responsibility and consequences, and growth continues through mistakes and learning.
The Subtle Power of Placebo
Placebo isn’t just belief. It can work even if you know it’s a placebo. Following a process – combined with trust or faith – can activate changes in the mind and body.
This is why some seemingly odd practices work for some people. If I confidently told you that carrying a banana on your head for three days would bring unexpected money, I’m certain a few people would experience it. Not because of magic, but because belief was the only thing blocking that outcome.
However, placebo has limits. It only works where belief was the obstacle. And many modern “systems” that work for some people are riding mostly on placebo power – something that desperate seekers, in particular, can be vulnerable to.
Why Experience Alone Can Mislead
Many people rely on personal experience to validate their beliefs. But the mind is not an infallible witness.
History is full of examples – at one time, it was “experience” that the earth was flat. On a personal level, you might think a friendship is perfect until you discover betrayal, and your experience instantly changes.
Experiences happen within the mind, and the mind is limited. Meditation is essential for learning to see beyond its stories. Without deeper, immersive practices – like multi-day meditation retreats – it’s difficult to cross certain thresholds. Daily practice can take you far, but it will not carry you into the deepest truths.
In Closing
Affirmations, manifestation, and placebo can be useful in certain contexts, but they are stepping stones – not destinations. Real spiritual progress comes from shedding layers of belief, facing truth directly, and engaging in sustained, disciplined practice.
The more we learn to suspend the mind’s stories and rest in direct awareness, the closer we come to freedom.
