MCI defunct
The term of the Medical Council of India’s Board of Governors has ended, rendering the apex medical regulator headless.
Sources said the Cabinet gave its approval to the note for the draft ordinance in this regard which is likely to be issued by the President soon.
The need for issue of an ordinance came as the Indian Medical Council (Amendment) Bill, 2013, which allows for an elected apex medical regulator, is yet to be passed by Parliament even though it has been approved by the Cabinet. MORE HERE

PG seat prices go up becos of NEET confusion
The race for that coveted post-graduate medical seat in Karnataka just got tougher. Two years ago, a PG seat in orthopedics in a prestigious private medical college in Bangalore cost Rs 1 crore. This year, it has touched Rs 2 crore. The price of an MD (Radiology) seat available for Rs 2 crore last year is likely to go up to Rs 2.75 crore this year.

Ramadoss illegally allowed admission in medical college: CBI
New Delhi: CBI on Friday told a Delhi court that former union health minister Anbumani Ramadoss, who along with others, is accused in a graft case, had “illegally” allowed an Indore-based medical college to proceed with the admissions without having sufficient faculty and clinical material.
During arguments on framing of charges, the agency told Special CBI judge Ravinder Kaur that Ramadoss, in conspiracy with the co-accused, had given approval in permitting Index Medical College Hospital and Research Centre (IMCHRC) to take admission for second year despite the fact that Medical Council of India (MCI) and a committee, appointed by the Supreme Court, recommended against it. The Bandra District Consumer Redressal Forum has directed a Kandivali-based dentist to pay Rs 75,000 to a woman for deficiency in service. The dentist, Dr Shaung Lo Chen, allegedly administered wrong treatment and extracted two of her healthy teeth.

Chennai- A city dentist, who employed a child labourer at home, was ordered by the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) to conduct dental camps in the government children’s homes for free. The dentist’s family not only exploited the child but also used to beat her.

Link between tooth whiteners and oral cancer
A small study suggests that the incorrect use of tooth whiteners might be a risk factor in oral cancer among those under 45.
One case in ten of oral cancer occurs in the under-45s and often there is no clear risk factor, like heavy drinking or heavy smoking, involved. SC has directed colleges to declare all pending PG results, which were stayed by the December 13, 2012, order. However, this is only an interim arrangement for this year and a final judgement will be delivered by the Supreme Court in the first week of July.

Cavity statistics don’t support fluoridation
Investigative reporting by Portland’s KATU-2 News, new state cavity data shows fluoridation supporters’ central arguments are completely inaccurate. The new cavity data that KATU and The Oregonian obtained through Oregon’s Public Records Act shows that cavity rates in Oregon just dropped 19 percent while Multnomah County’s rates dropped by 10 percent. Data showed that 48 percent of kids surveyed in Portland’s schools have had a cavity at some point while kids attending schools in Oregon’s fluoridated cities had a 52 percent cavity rate.
While this was clearly bad news for those pushing fluoridation, it highlights that we already have better alternatives for helping children’s teeth than increasing water rates to add fluoridation chemicals to our water. FULL NEWS

A Few Tips That Will Help You to Be Really Effective with Your Toothbrush
Typically, most people “build up” plaque and tarter on the tongue side (inside) of the lower teeth, if you want to be really effective with your toothbrush, you may find it beneficial to start there.  It also means that when you are rushing to finish up, you have at least gotten the hardest area first
Also, “dry brushing” with either a dry tooth brush or one wet with water only can really help you access the areas that tend to be the site for build up, especially the lower front inside area.
Lastly, holding your toothbrush with a Vulcan death grip will not get the plaque off any quicker or easier, honestly the only thing that it will do is perhaps brush the tooth or gum away.  Try holding your toothbrush as if it were a paintbrush and go easy on the strokes.

Teeth and implants are not same
This debate between implants and endodontics should not exist.  Implants and root canals are not alternative treatments.  If a tooth and its surrounding periodontium is in tact, we should make every effort to preserve them, because an implant cannot restore these periodontal tissues and loss of these tissues leads to a host of other challenges.
While implants have an important part in dentistry, an implant can never effectively reform the periodontium.  The bundle bone and the family of fibers (dentogingival, dentoperiosteal, alveologingival, periosteogingival, interpapillary, intergingival, circular, semicircular, transgingival, intercircular, transeptal fibers) that create the architecture of the dental papilla all belong to the tooth. Delhi High Court rules doctors not responsible if patients do not respond to treatment
A Delhi High Court said a doctor cannot be held liable if the patient has not responded favourably to a treatment.
The order came out after the court refused to frame charges against two doctors and three nurses of RBTB Hospital accused of causing a man’s death due to negligence.
Court added that it was the court’s obligation to ensure that doctors and medical practitioners are protected from frivolous and unjust prosecution and they be summoned only in cases of high degree of culpable criminal negligence.  MORE HERE

Healthy gums key to preventing illnesses

Anticariogenic agents of the future may come from nature
A study published recently in Archives of Pharmacal Research (March 12, 2013) reported antibacterial activity of Albizia myriophylla extracts against Streptococcus mutans and clinical isolates. In this study, samples of the wood were collected from south Thailand and extracted for several suspected anticariogenic agents. Of several compound isolates, the most active against cavity-causing bacteria was found to be lupinifolin. New light/research on Fluoride action on teeth
Research from a German university – All bacteria species exhibit lower adhesion forces after fluoride treatment of the surfaces. Which is the best endodontic sealer for root canal
Bacteria living in the root canal system are the enemy in the course of successful endodontic therapy. Sealers are meant to find this, but no proper evaluation has been done so far.
Now a team of German researchers has compared the antibacterial effect of eight different sealers and two temporary sealers on three endodontologically detectable species of bacteria and found that Hermetic comes out on top (Dental Materials, May 2013, Vol. 29:5, pp. 542-549).
The use of Hermetic as a sealer in refractory cases of endodontic therapy could possibly reduce the failure rate. Whether the antibacterial activity of the sealers found in this in vitro study will lead to higher success rates…MORE HERE

PIL for 50 percent non-doctors in medical councils
Kolkata, April 27 (IANS) To make medical councils in India “unbiased” and “corruption-free”, NGO People For Better Treatment (PBT) will file a public interest litigation (PIL) to get non-doctors into the council.
“Every medical board in the US has 50 percent non-doctors as members. In India, it is all a doctor’s group. We are planning to bring a PIL soon on this,” PBT president Kunal Saha said here Saturday.
According to the US-based doctor, corruption in the medical fraternity can be prevented if India takes up initiatives that ensure professionals other than doctors are allowed to be a part of medical groups. NEWSLINK

There are now more women than men in the U.S. who are oral and maxillofacial surgeons, orthodontists, and prosthodontists, a new survey shows.
The CareerBuilder/Economic Modeling Specialists survey revealed that four of the 15 top-paying jobs in the U.S. are now dominated by women, according to story by United Press International.
Women comprise some 57% of the oral and maxillofacial surgeons, 62% of the prosthodontists, and 57% of the orthodontists, the survey found. In addition, nearly half of all U.S. dentists (49%) are women.

Conclusions. These study results revealed that adults with diabetes are at higher risk of experiencing tooth loss and edentulism than are adults without diabetes. One of every five cases of edentulism in the United States is linked to diabetes.
Practical Implications. Although the association between diabetes and periodontal disease is well established, health care professionals also need to recognize the risk of tooth loss and its effect on quality of life among people with diabetes. JADA LINK

Research to Increase the Success Rate of Tooth Implants
Elderly or people with osteoporosis, smokers, diabetics or people who have had cancer are sometimes not eligible to receive dental implants as their bones are unable to correctly integrate the new prostheses which replace the root. Researchers at the Universitat Jaume I (UJI) in Castellón have developed an implant coating with a novel biodegradable material aimed at people with bone deficit. It will also increase the overall success rate of implants through an enhanced biocompatibility and reduce the time of osseointegration or bone integration. MORE HERE

rish scientists have identified a number of hepatitis C cases among “health tourists” who had dental work or cosmetic surgery carried out overseas, as well as among people receiving tattoos using unhygienic equipment.

Chief secretary to probe pvt college admissions
The chief secretary will conduct a probe into the alleged fraudulent practices while granting admissions to private medical and dental colleges, state medical education minister Dr Vijay Kumar Gavit said on Wednesday.
While replying to a calling-attention motion raised by senior Bharatiya Janata Party legislator Devendra Fadnavis, Gavit said that the state plans to set up a new regulatory mechanism to curb malpractices during admissions. LINK

Herbal lollipops fight perio disease
Researchers from the U.S. have found new evidence that glycyrrhizol A from the Chinese herb Glycyrrhiza uralensis, more commonly known as licorice root, in lollipops improves oral health. In a recent study, they found that the herbal compound reduced the activity of the main agents of periodontal disease and tooth decay.
In the in vitro study, researchers from the University of Iowa inoculated agar plates with a number of pathogens, including agents associated with periodontal disease, such as Porphyromonas gingivalis, Prevotella intermedia, Tannerella forsythia and Streptococcus mutans, which causes dental caries. Two dental college students released a video to news channels on Tuesday claiming that medical education minister Dr Vijaykumar Gavit abused them when they went to seek his help for continuing their course after their college lost its affiliation.

Justice Ramana asked what the responsibility of the MCI was when such allegations were made by girl students against the professors of a college. He asked whether the MCI had any responsibility to regulate affairs of medical colleges, including the conduct of professors.
Justice Ramana directed the Registry to implead the MCI as one of the party to the petition.

Nobel Biocare to settle multimillion dollar implant lawsuit with dentist
Nobel Biocare will reportedly pay up to $1.3 million to settle a $450 million lawsuit brought against it three years ago by a California dentist who said the company had misrepresented the safety of its NobelDirect implants.
The lawsuit, which was filed in June 2010 by Jason Yamada, DDS, of Torrance, CA, in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, sought compensation for dentists who had to perform surgery on their patients or pay for restorative surgery due to complications from the implants. Indian private equity firm Asian Healthcare Fund (AHF) has confirmed that it will be investing significantly in one of the country’s largest dental chains. According to CEO Ajay Kumar Vij, his company intends to pump INR400 million (US$7 million) into Western Indian-based Total Dental Care, which runs dental clinics in Mumbai and Pune under the mydentist brand. A local dentist who owned his own practice and served as a University Athletic Association dental consultant died early Friday after his car caught fire in a Gainesville driveway.

Arkansas health officials are recommending that patients of an Arkansas dentist who died last year, including some patients of the Ocean Dental clinic in Fayetteville, undergo free state blood tests for possible contamination by an “infectious material.”
“The reason why we are doing this is because single dose vials of a medicine called Meperidine, another name for that is Demerol, had the vial caps taken off and put back on,” Haselow said.

Laser method yields 3D images of surface bacteria
Laser Zentrum Hannover (LZH) has filed a patent application for a scanning laser optical tomography (SLOT) process that has previously yielded high-resolution 3D images of bacteria on dental implant surfaces.
SLOT was originally developed as a 3D fluorescence process for quickly scanning larger samples. It is seen as the optical equivalent to computed tomography and works with isotropic resolution — that is, with the same resolution in all three spatial planes, LZH noted in a news release. LINK  image

A DENTIST is under investigation by the General Dental Council (GDC) for allegedly misleading patients over his qualifications.
Having trained at Guy’s Hospital, Dr Simon Darfoor works in a clinic on Harley Street and charges up to £1,000 for a pioneering procedure to repair receding gums using tissue grafts.
Dr Darfoor stated on his website that his diploma in implant dentistry was the “gold standard” for training and the “highest postgraduate qualification”.

Effect of needle insertion depth and root canal curvature on irrigant extrusion ex vivo.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of needle type and insertion depth, apical preparation size, and root canal curvature on irrigant extrusion by using a recently introduced method.
The open-ended needle extruded significantly more irrigant than the closed-ended. Irrigant extrusion decreased as needles moved away from working length or when the apical size was increased. Needle wedging increased extrusion, especially when an open-ended needle was used. Root canal curvature did not have a statistically significant effect on irrigant extrusion.

The pilot study, led by Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and published this week online in the journal Psychiatric Quarterly, suggests a link between salivary concentrations of certain hormones and aggression.
