Human teeth can be engineered to regenerate, thanks to the world’s most poisonous fish.
British scientists have been studying the pufferfish beak and have found it is uniquely resilient, generating new teeth every two weeks for the animal’s lifetime. They believe the beak provides a model for creating a system of continuous tooth replacement in humans.
“The pufferfish beak is completely unique,” project leader Dr. Gareth Fraser of the University of Sheffield says. “The main thing is we can use it to identify the gene network for tooth replacement. We can see how nature makes new teeth and about the genes that govern that process.” MORE HERE

It seems passing out from a self-financing medical or dental college in the state is a tougher task than getting a seat. Final year results of MBBS, BDS and BAMS courses published by the Kerala University of Health Sciences have raised a question mark on the quality of medical education provided by self-financing colleges in the state as most of them fared poorly compared to their counterparts in the government sector. MORE HERE

The sample used in the present study comprised 60 extracted human premolars bonded with brackets. The sample was divided into three groups (each n = 20; sandblasting, direct flaming, and grinding with a green stone bur). SEM was used to compare the surface characteristics of the new and rebonded bracket bases for all three groups. Results: The Z test for the direct flaming and grinding groups revealed statistically significant bond strength (P < .05). The ANOVA test for all three groups showed P < .05, which is statistically significant. SEM for the sandblasting method showed well-defined retentive areas. Conclusion: When rebonding brackets, sandblasting the bracket base yields the highest bond strength. ORTHODONTICS (CHIC) 2012;13:e1–e9.

Study results have suggested that periodontal bacteria can migrate from the mouth to the synovial cavity, which might be the reason for the failure of artificial joints. The study was conducted by researchers at the Case Western Reserve University’s School of Dental Medicine and the University Hospitals Case Medical Center.
“For a long time, we have suspected that these bacteria were causing problems in arthritis patients, but never had the scientific evidence to support it,” said Prof. Nabil Bissada, chair of the Department of Periodontics at the dental school. MORE HERE

The five biggest killers in Central India are cancers of mouth, breast, cervix, lungs and stomach, in that order, according to the observations of city-based RST Regional Cancer Hospital. India’s $12.4 billion pharmaceutical industry manufactures almost one-third of the world’s antibiotics, and people use them so liberally that relatively benign and beneficial bacteria are becoming drug-immune in a pool of resistance that thwarts even high-powered antibiotics, the so-called remedies of last resort.
“You have almost no control over the prescription of antibiotics,” says Moellering, who has studied drug resistance for four decades.
Antibiotics even pollute India’s rivers, streams and soil. The bacteria that thrive in these places do so because they’ve developed resistance to the drugs they encounter. People or animals who ingest the water or soil may become colonized by the resistant germs. MORE HERE

A German natural cosmetics manufacturer has launched a toothpaste on the market that could benefit people unable to absorb vitamin B12 from food owing to a missing enzyme in their stomachs. According to the manufacturer, the toothpaste is the first of its kind worldwide.
According to the German Medical Association, five to 11 million Germans suffer from a vitamin B12 deficiency, which may go unnoticed for a long time. Often to blame for the deficiency is a missing enzyme, which is necessary for the absorption of the vitamin. Since vitamin B12 is present mainly in animal products, many vegetarians and vegans are also affected by the deficiency. Also at risk are pregnant and lactating women, smokers and alcoholics, people suffering from diseases of the gastro-intestinal tract, such as Crohn’s disease, and the elderly. LINK HERE

As my UK dentist colleague Dr Martin Kelleher, who lectures on “veneerial” disease, would say, use the daughter test before you do anything irreversible. I would add that you owe it to your patients to learn from the best in the profession, and cross-training in continuing education may be the best investment you can make in dental practice.
“Smilorexia” is the fanciful term I coined for this disorder, which appears to affect attractive young women more than others. If you open the pages of any journal published by the American Association of Cosmetic Dentistry, you will no doubt find at least one or two of these patients having extensive veneer treatment that could easily have been avoided with unbiased professional advice. The problem is that too many dentists have dedicated their lives to pure cosmetic dentistry, which is often based on using porcelain as a cure-all. Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad also said in the Lok Sabha that autonomous institutions like MCI, Nursing Council of India and Dental Council of India will be subsumed under the umbrella NCHRH. He stated this while allaying fears that the medical council will be dissolved during a debate on the Indian Medical Council (Amendment) Bill, 2012. The bill seeks to extend the tenure of the MCI Board of Governors till May 2013 as its current tenure comes to an end on May 14. “We will not dissolve the Medical Council, Dental Council or Nursing Council. MORE HERE

Timing of orthodontic treatment, especially for children with developing class III malocclusions, has always been somewhat controversial, and definitive treatment tends to be delayed for severe class III cases. Developing class III patients with moderate to severe anterior crossbite and deep bite may need early intervention in some selected cases. Class III malocclusion may develop in children as a result of an inherent growth abnormality, i.e. true class III malocclusion, or as a result of premature occlusal contacts causing forward functional shift of the mandible, which is known as pseudo class III malocclusion. These cases, if not treated at the initial stage of development, interfere with normal growth of the jaw bases and may result in severe facial deformities. The treatment should be carried out as early as possible for permitting normal growth of the skeletal bases. FULL PAPER

Given the size, it is possible to conduct the exam online only and this has been conveyed to the health ministry,” senior official in the health ministry disclosed. MORE HERE

Since the beginning of braces, dental wax has been the standard product for protecting sensitive mouth tissue from rough brackets and wires. Wax is messy and time consuming to apply to each bracket. Wax has poor adhesive qualities and does not provide any type of lasting protection especially if you plan on eating, drinking or sleeping! And through all this discomfort there has never been a quality replacement product…until now! See video below

Nanotech- Dental Fillings That Kill Bacteria and Remineralize the Tooth
Scientists using nanotechology at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry have created the first cavity-filling composite that kills harmful bacteria and regenerates tooth structure lost to bacterial decay.
Rather than just limiting decay with conventional fillings, the new composite is a revolutionary dental weapon to control harmful bacteria, which co-exist in the natural colony of microorganisms in the mouth, says professor Huakun (Hockin) Xu, PhD, MS.
After a dentist drills out a decayed tooth, the cavity still contains residual bacteria. Xu says it is not possible for a dentist to remove all the damaged tissue, so it’s important to neutralize the harmful effects of the bacteria, which is just what the new nanocomposites are able to do. …MORE HERE

CLONED SMILE- Grow your own teeth and implants for a new SMILE
To grow teeth, researchers isolate stem cells from the mouth or bone marrow. The cells are multiplied in the lab, then grown on 3-dimensional scaffolds. Stem cells are then attached to an actual tooth.
“All the animal studies that have been done so far are very encouraging, so it looks like the clinical trials will be successful,”.
The teeth can be grown in the lab and implanted in the patient or they could actually grow inside the patient’s mouth, filling in empty spaces with new teeth in just a few months.
“This will be, in the future, the standard of care for dentistry, to use stem cell therapy to regrow teeth or parts of teeth,” said Murray. FULL STORY
Who would have imagined that the page 1 story in the March 6, 2012 New York Times would read “Preschoolers in Surgery for a Mouthful of Cavities”?
After decades of progress, caries is on the rebound. In 2000 the U.S. Surgeon General issued a landmark report on the oral health of Americans that warned of “a silent epidemic of dental disease among certain high-risk populations.”
In 2007 the U.S. Centers for Disease Control issued a report showing a dramatic rise in cavities in very young children, also those most difficult cases to treat in the dental office.
Why is this happening, and why after 170 years has the dental profession not found the cure for caries? These are important questions that do not have simple or easy answers. FULL STORY

One-appointment endodontic therapy was performed by a single endodontist. Visual Analogue Scale was used to record pain before treatment and 4, 8, 12, 24 and 48 h postoperatively. Inaugurating the 25th anniversary celebration of Manipal College of Dental Sciences (MCODS) Mangalore, Dr. Majumdar said good clinical material was essential for a dental student. The pre-university students look at clinical material and the research activities carried out by the dental colleges and then opt for the best college.
Dr. Majumdar said he had found that some of the colleges, especially in North India, had poor clinical material. MORE HERE

A dentist in Poland, dumped by her boyfriend, got payback by removing all of her former lover’s teeth — leading his new lady to dump him, too.
“I tried to be professional and detach myself from my emotions,” Mackowiak, 34, told the Daily Mail. “But when I saw him lying there I just thought, ‘What a bastard.’” MORE HERE

A 71-year-old woman is suing a dentist, accusing him of dropping a small screwdriver down her throat that migrated to her digestive tract and later required surgery to remove.
The lawsuit then claims that the X-rays showed the screwdriver in Ms David’s stomach, and that the dentist discharged her with instructions to ‘eat a diet high in fibre.’ MORE HERE

This report describes a novel concept of en-masse retraction with temporary skeletal anchorage devices in place of posterior bonding or banding. The patient was a Korean woman, aged 24 years 4 months, with a Class II Division 1 malocclusion with severe mandibular anterior crowding. Both molars showed decalcification of the cervical areas. Partial osseointegration-based C-implants and C-tube plates were placed bilaterally between the maxillary second premolars and the first molars and in the posterior mandible.
