DCI acts to revise Ethical code for Dentists
After a gap of 36 years the EC of the DCI appointed ( Jan.2012) Dr Amit Roy (EC member) and Dr George Paul (Maxillofacial Surgeon and qualified medical ethicist) to prepare draft revised DCI code of Ethics Regulations (2012), To enroll 3 other members with experience in the said field to amend the Code of Ethics regulation 1976. The expert group consisting of Dr Amit Roy, Dr George Paul, Dr Girish Karandikar, Dr Manjunath Roy and Dr Santhosh Sridhar prepared a draft Code of Ethics Amendment which was passed by the EC of the DCI on 12th May. The draft code was presented to the AGM of DCI on 13th May 2012 and the members of the AGM have been given 15 days to respond with comments and suggestions and it will thereafter be forwarded to the Government for notification after due process. MDS course- A new specialty added ?
The Dental Council of India has approved a three-year master of dental surgery (MDS) course in forensic dentistry.
Forensic dentistry or forensic odontology is the proper handling, examination and evaluation of dental evidence.
“The proposal to have MDS in forensic dentistry has been approved by the Dental Council of India at a meeting on May 14 at Chandigarh. The proposal will now be sent to the central government for an issuance of notification,” said Dr Ajit Dinkar, professor at Goa Dental College, who is also a member of Dental Council of India. Though most people brush their teeth regularly, only one in ten does it in a way that effectively prevents tooth decay, according to a study in Sweden.
Researchers at the Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg say almost all Swedes regularly brush their teeth with fluoride toothpaste, yet only few know the best brushing technique, how the toothpaste should be used and how fluoride prevents tooth decay.
In two separate studies, Pia Gabre and her colleagues at the Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, studied the toothbrushing habits of 2013 Swedes aged 15-16, 31-35, 60-65 and 76-80 – how often and for how long, how often fluoride toothpaste is used, how much toothpaste is put on the toothbrush and how much water is used during and after the toothbrushing. Dentist left broken drill bit in man’s tooth-Broken RC instruments in eyes of media !
Halit Kara, from Newcastle, told ninemsn the titanium drill piece was lodged in his tooth after undergoing root canal work in 2007.
Mr Kara claims the dentist, who worked at the Newcastle Dental Laser Centre but has since moved overseas, told him that he could leave the piece in his tooth because “it would act as a filling”.
Five years later, the drill piece is still lodged in the 29-year-old’s tooth and has become infected several times, costing him more than $4000 in medical bills. NEWSLINK

Blood platelet concentrates can improve the outcomes of dental implants, according to a case study in the Journal of Oral Implantology.
The study authors describe the experience of a patient who had fractured an incisor during a sports-related injury and underwent an all-inclusive procedure where the tooth was extracted and an implant inserted (Journal of Oral Implantology, April 2012, Vol. 38:2, pp. 181-187).

British scientists have been studying the pufferfish beak and have found it is uniquely resilient, generating new teeth every two weeks for the animal’s lifetime. They believe the beak provides a model for creating a system of continuous tooth replacement in humans.
“The pufferfish beak is completely unique,” project leader Dr. Gareth Fraser of the University of Sheffield says. “The main thing is we can use it to identify the gene network for tooth replacement. We can see how nature makes new teeth and about the genes that govern that process.” MORE HERE

200 new dental clinics to open in Jeddah
The director general of the Jeddah Directorate of Health Affairs in Jeddah, Dr. Sami Ba-Dawood, announced on Saturday that the Ministry of Health has approved plans to build 200 new dental clinics in the Northern and Southern districts of Jeddah, at a total cost of SR 120 million. The announcement coincided with the week of heightened awareness and prevention of teeth and oral problems.
Dr. Ba-Dawood called upon all government and private hospitals and health care facilities to conduct activities to celebrate the Oral and Dental Health Awareness Week that the Kingdom is participating in, along with its neighboring Gulf countries. He visited the Dental Center in King Fahd Hospital in Jeddah to commence the activities that the hospital is hosting to promote heightened awareness in the community regarding the health of the teeth, gums and mouth. Azithromycin could be bad for heart
In a study, Vanderbilt researchers have found a 2.5-fold higher risk of death from cardiovascular death in the first five days of taking azithromycin when compared with another common antibiotic or no antibiotics at all.
Wayne A. Ray, Ph.D., professor of Preventive Medicine, and C. Michael Stein, M.B.Ch.B., the Dan May Chair in Medicine and professor of Pharmacology, collaborated on the research.
Azithromycin is one of the most popular treatments for bacterial sinus infections and bronchitis. Although it was previously considered to carry little to no cardiac risk, the researchers noted well-documented reports in the published literature as FDA database reports linking azithromycin with serious arrhythmias. Dentist made false claims about curing cancer
A DENTIST who claimed he could cure cancer with therapy and herbs deceived potential patients, the Court of Appeal ruled yesterday.
The court said that Noel Campbell and his Hope Institute falsely claimed that their treatments, costing thousands of dollars, had been peer-reviewed by the medical and scientific communities.
Mr Campbell, who said he was given the title “professor” by a Chinese university, claimed he could beat a range of cancers with a combination of counselling, photo-dynamic, radio wave and ozone therapies, Chinese herbs and Japanese mushrooms. MORE HERE

Shear bond strength of rebonded orthodontic brackets
The sample used in the present study comprised 60 extracted human premolars bonded with brackets. The sample was divided into three groups (each n = 20; sandblasting, direct flaming, and grinding with a green stone bur). SEM was used to compare the surface characteristics of the new and rebonded bracket bases for all three groups. Results: The Z test for the direct flaming and grinding groups revealed statistically significant bond strength (P < .05). The ANOVA test for all three groups showed P < .05, which is statistically significant. SEM for the sandblasting method showed well-defined retentive areas. Conclusion: When rebonding brackets, sandblasting the bracket base yields the highest bond strength. ORTHODONTICS (CHIC) 2012;13:e1–e9.

Oral bacteria responsible for artificial joint failure
Study results have suggested that periodontal bacteria can migrate from the mouth to the synovial cavity, which might be the reason for the failure of artificial joints. In recent DNA tests, researchers detected the same bacterial DNA in synovial fluid and dental plaque in 14 percent of patients with arthritis and periodontitis.
The study was conducted by researchers at the Case Western Reserve University’s School of Dental Medicine and the University Hospitals Case Medical Center.
“For a long time, we have suspected that these bacteria were causing problems in arthritis patients, but never had the scientific evidence to support it,” said Prof. Nabil Bissada, chair of the Department of Periodontics at the dental school. MORE HERE

t is bad news for those Malayalis who use smokeless tobacco — in the form of ‘gutka’ and similar products — as a research in the US has, for the first time, identified a specific oral cancer-causing chemical in smokeless tobacco products.
Dr. Silvia Balbo of the Masonic Cancer Center at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, US, found after a study on rats that smokeless tobacco products contain a strong oral carcinogen — a chemical called (S)-N’-nitrosonornicotine, or (S)-NNN. Dr. K.R. Thankappan, professor and head, Achutha Menon Centre for Health Science Studies in Thiruvananthapuram, said though this study is yet to be translated on humans, it is a definite pointer to the grave risk that use of smokeless tobacco products poses to health. No Dental/medical admission beyond 15 July -Supreme court
The Supreme Court has framed a series of guidelines for admission to MBBS and BDS courses in the country, saying after July 15 each year, neither the government nor the medical or dental councils shall issue any recognition or approval for that academic year.
“After 15th July of each year, neither the Union of India nor the Medical or Dental Council of India shall issue any recognition or approval for the current academic year. If any such approval is granted after 15th July of any year, it shall only be operative for the next academic year and not in the current academic year,” the bench of justices A K Patnaik and Swatanter Kumar said.  TIMES NEWS

London: Patients left stranded on trolleys for hours and forced to have treatment in corridors is becoming a familiar scene in British hospitals, presenting a “worrying picture” for the authorities.
Nurses in Britain say patients are being forced to have treatment in corridors partly due to the loss of hospital beds, the BBC reported.

USA dental school accused of negligence, using dirty equipment
PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh’s School of Dental Medicine is accused in a lawsuit of being negligent and using dirty tools to treat a patient.
Conroy Griffie told Channel 4 Action News’ Paul Van Osdol he was in disbelief when he received a startling letter from the school a week after having one of his teeth pulled.
The letter said, “…the instruments utilized during your appointment in the Emergency Clinic were not disinfected to our usual standards.”
Griffie said he initially thought it must have been a joke.
But after reading that he could be at risk of HIV, hepatitis and other infectious diseases, he realized it was anything but a laughing matter.
“Not in my wildest dreams could I imagine I would go for something like that or they would expose me to something like that. I thought I was safe, in good hands,” said Griffie. NEWSLINK

Flying doctors plan mobile dental service
The Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) in Queensland says it wants to expand to provide a mobile dental service to rural communities.
The RFDS already has eight bases across Queensland and 20 planes.
However, RFDS chief executive officer Nino Di Marco says it has identified a need for more oral health services in rural areas and has applied for $1 million to establish a mobile oral health team.

“I’ve cracked fillings from grinding my teeth,” Dragan said.
A mouth guard helped but didn’t stop the pain.
“It doesn’t stop you from grinding so the muscles are still activated so you’re still getting pain in the jaw and headaches,” she said.

Timely management of developing class III malocclusion
Timing of orthodontic treatment, especially for children with developing class III malocclusions, has always been somewhat controversial, and definitive treatment tends to be delayed for severe class III cases. Developing class III patients with moderate to severe anterior crossbite and deep bite may need early intervention in some selected cases. Class III malocclusion may develop in children as a result of an inherent growth abnormality, i.e. true class III malocclusion, or as a result of premature occlusal contacts causing forward functional shift of the mandible, which is known as pseudo class III malocclusion. These cases, if not treated at the initial stage of development, interfere with normal growth of the jaw bases and may result in severe facial deformities. MDS Entrance may go ONLINE like IIM
The National Board of Examination (NBE), which will be conducting the Common Entrance Test (CET) for PG medical students, has decided to replicate the IIM model, an “online test” format for the PG medical students.
The proposal for the new method has been sent to the Union health ministry and the NBE wants to kick-off with this from the next academic year without any glitches. “The NBE has undertaken detailed planning. Given the size, it is possible to conduct the exam online only and this has been conveyed to the health ministry,” senior official in the health ministry disclosed. MORE HERE

Tooth whitening cowboys to be prosecuted
Government must do more to ensure cosmetic cowboys using potentially harmful tooth whitening procedures are prosecuted, an MP has warned.Calls to prosecute offenders is being backed by the British Dental Association.
Such procedures, increasingly carried out by unqualified therapists who charge significantly less than professional dentists, have in some cases been blamed for permanently damaging patients’ teeth.
Mr Burns said the General Dental Council is cracking down on illegal dentistry and earlier this year a ‘cosmetologist’ was successfully prosecuted for offering tooth-whitening treatment. MORE HERE

How calculus/plaque helped in learning about diet of ancient humans
University of Nevada, Reno researchers G. Richard Scott and Simon R. Poulson discovered that very small particles of plaque removed from the teeth of ancient populations may provide good clues about their diets. Scott is chair and associate professor of anthropology in the College of Liberal Arts. Poulson is research professor of geological sciences in the Mackay School of Earth Sciences and Engineering.
Scott obtained samples of dental calculus from 58 skeletons buried in the Cathedral of Santa Maria in northern Spain dating from the 11th to 19th centuries to conduct research on the diet of this ancient population. MORE HERE

The teeth can be grown in the lab and implanted in the patient or they could actually grow inside the patient’s mouth, filling in empty spaces with new teeth in just a few months.

AAID Says Texas Ad Rules Are Unconstitutional
The American Academy of Implant Dentistry (AAID) has filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Austin seeking to invalidate a Texas regulation that severely restricts dentists from advertising their bona fide AAID credentials in implant dentistry.  In 2009 and 2010, AAID won judicial verdicts overturning similar rules enforced by state dental boards in Florida and California.

Washington: A compound in garlic is 100 times more effective than two popular antibiotics at fighting the Campylobacter bacterium, one of the most common causes of intestinal illness, researchers at Washington State University have found.
The discovery opens the door to new treatments for raw and processed meats and food preparation surfaces.

Teledentistry Improves Treatment Rate
Children of migrant farm workers were several times more likely to get treatment for early childhood caries if they were enrolled in a teledentistry program, researchers reported here at the American Telemedicine Association 17th Annual International Meeting.
The treatment rate increased from 15% to 95% at 1-year follow-up, said Terry Yonker, RN, MS, telemedicine clinical coordinator at Finger Lakes Community Health in Marion, New York. “We were totally amazed by how much the kids liked this,” she said. MORE HERE

Dental student stabbed, dies
Seven months after he was stabbed by an anti-social element following an argument at a roadside eatery in Korattur, a third-year dental student died at a hospital in Koyambedu, where he was undergoing treatment, on Sunday night.
Korattur police said the victim was Rajasekar (37), a resident of Srinivasapuram in Guduvanchery and was a dental student at a private college. The incident that led to his death occurred on September 5, 2011, when Rajasekar and some friends went to a roadside eatery in Periyar Nagar for dinner. A bill seeking to extend the tenure of the re-constituted top body governing health education — Medical Council of India (MCI) — by another year is expected to be introduced in Parliament this week.
Even as the proposed NCHRH Bill, that aims at creating a super medical authority by scrapping all other regulatory bodies is in the offing, with the same being referred to the standing committee, the ministry is left with no option but to introduce the IMC (amendment) bill for the extension of the term of the board of governors for another year before May 15.

Sports drinks can spell dental disaster-Enemy of teeth
A recent study published in the May/June 2012 issue of General Dentistry, the peer-reviewed clinical journal of the Academy of General Dentistry, found that an alarming increase in the consumption of sports and energy drinks, especially among adolescents, is causing irreversible damage to teeth -specifically, the high acidity levels in the drinks erode tooth enamel, the glossy outer layer of the tooth.
“Young adults consume these drinks assuming that they will improve their sports performance and energy levels and that they are ‘better’ for them than soda,” says Poonam Jain, BDS, MS, MPH, lead author of the study. “Most of these patients are shocked to learn that these drinks are essentially bathing their teeth with acid.” ..MORE HERE

Prophylactic intraligamentary injection of piroxicam (feldene) for the management of post-endodontic pain
The effects of intraligamentary injection of piroxicam have not previously been studied. Sixty-five patients with irreversible pulpitis were randomly divided into two groups. The active group received intraligamentary injections totalling 0.4 mL of piroxicam, while the placebo group received the same amount of lidocaine. One-appointment endodontic therapy was performed by a single endodontist. Visual Analogue Scale was used to record pain before treatment and 4, 8, 12, 24 and 48 h postoperatively. The decrease in the intensity of post-treatment pain between the two groups was very significant. Intraligamentary injection of piroxicam can be considered an effective method for reducing post-endodontic pain. (Australian Endodontic Journal,Volume 38, Issue 1, pages 31–35, April 2012)

Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Friday announced allocation of Rs.10 crore for upgrading the Tamil Nadu Government Dental College and Hospital here into a centre of excellence in dentistry.
Making a suo motu statement in the Assembly, she said that the amount would be spent on constructing new buildings and creation of new posts.

Dentist dropped screwdriver down her throat
A 71-year-old woman is suing a dentist, accusing him of dropping a small screwdriver down her throat that migrated to her digestive tract and later required surgery to remove.
Ms David claims Dr W.B. Galbreath told patient Lena David to try to regurgitate the screwdriver and then sent her for X-rays when that did not work.
The lawsuit then claims that the X-rays showed the screwdriver in Ms David’s stomach, and that the dentist discharged her with instructions to ‘eat a diet high in fibre.’ MORE HERE

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Friday filed a chargesheet against former union health minister Anbumani Ramadoss for abusing his official position in favouring pecuniary advantage to a Indore-based medical college.

A leading study has warned that millions of people who take dietary supplements to boost their health may be doing themselves more harm than good.
Scientists have claimed taking pills and capsules, like folic acid, vitamin D and calcium, do not reduce the risk of cancer.

Dental students challenge govt decision on PG seats
A group of dental students studying have challenged the Gujrat state government’s decision to split the post-graduate seats into management and state quotas in 50:50 ratio. Earlier, only 15 percent of the seats were in management quota.
The matter came up for hearing on Monday before the bench of acting chief justice Bhaskar Bhattacharya and justice JB Pardiwala. The bench ordered that the petition be placed before the high court bench which hears education-related matters on such issues.
The students have also challenged the bona fide of the PG entrance examination conducted by the consortium of Self-Financed Dental Colleges on February 5. NEWSLINK

En-masse retraction with temporary implants without posterior bonding
This report describes a novel concept of en-masse retraction with temporary skeletal anchorage devices in place of posterior bonding or banding. The patient was a Korean woman, aged 24 years 4 months, with a Class II Division 1 malocclusion with severe mandibular anterior crowding. Both molars showed decalcification of the cervical areas. Partial osseointegration-based C-implants and C-tube plates were placed bilaterally between the maxillary second premolars and the first molars and in the posterior mandible.
These temporary skeletal anchorage devices were used as independent appliances for full retraction of the maxillary and mandibular anterior teeth 3-dimensionally without the assistance of posterior bonded appliances. A new report published today in Circulation, the journal of the American Heart Association (AHA), states that current scientific evidence does not establish a direct cause and effect relationship between gum disease and heart disease or stroke. Oral bacteria may influence joint failures
The culprit behind a failed hip or knee replacement may exist in the oral cavity, according to a new study in the Journal of Clinical Rheumatology.
DNA testing of bacteria from the fluid that lubricates hip and knee joints had bacteria with the same DNA as the plaque from patients with periodontal disease and in need of a joint replacement, according to researchers from the Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine (JCR April 2012, Vol. 18:3, pp. 117-121).
