New Approach to Shade matching
Tooth color is the complex result of several factors that must be carefully analyzed to understand the unique features that characterize an individual patient’s teeth, and precise matching seems impossible through conventional methods. To determine tooth color, it is necessary to abandon the classical shade guides and, along with them, customary shade-taking habits in favor of performing a higher level of tooth color analysis. I call this approach Doctor Vanini’s Color Theory. MORE HERE

Occipital condylar fractures in children: rare or under-diagnosed?
A 6-year-old female is described who sustained a fracture of the left occipital condyle after colliding with a car at low speed. The fracture was only visible on thin-slice CT of the neck, which is not routinely recommended in children following a road traffic accident. Fractures of the occipitoantlantoaxial complex are difficult to diagnose by plain radiography, and awareness of this problem needs to be raised among clinicians treating children. (Dentomaxillofacial Radiology (2012) 41, 175-176)
NOTE: WE had pointed out several years back that this kind of green stick fracture of condyles in kids frequently goes un-noticed and is the main cause of asymmetrical Class II malocclusions and facial asymmetry.

Changes in molar position associated with missing opposed and/or adjacent tooth-12 year study
Journal of Oral Rehabilitation-Volume 39, Issue 2, pages 136–143, February 2012
The degree of overeruption increased with decreased bone support. Molars with a mesial edentulous space were most prevalent in the lower jaw, but neither an edentulous space nor alveolar bone level/bone level change were found to have a significant effect on tipping of the molars. The average mesial tipping was 0·8° (s.d. 5·6).
In conclusion, unopposed molars showed a significantly increased risk for overeruption. Molars facing a mesial edentulous space showed a low risk for mesial tipping, but a significant interaction between overeruption and tipping was identified.

Most effective instructions to patient
Effective oral hygiene can be a major factor in preventing periodontal disease, but patient compliance can be a challenge.
Now a new study that compared the effectiveness of written, oral standardized, and oral individualized instructions in reducing gingivitis has found that the most effective of the three techniques was oral individualized instruction (Journal of Periodontology, January 20, 2012).
“We proved how important it is to point out the exact hygiene deficits of the patients and to show them how to overcome them,” Deinzer said. “Don’t just explain how to brush and floss in a standardized way, but identify the deficits of your individual patient and explain how to overcome them.”..
