Doctor sues Govt. for 60 Lakhs
A Sangli-based medical professional has approached the Bombay high court (HC) seeking a compensation of Rs60 lakh from the state government for spoiling his career.
Dr Shashikant Dorkar contented that the post-graduate course conducted by the Government Medical College at Mirajwas not recognised by the Medical Council of India (MCI).
Anyone practicing medicine without getting registered with the MCI is liable to be prosecuted under the MCI Act, and attracts punishment of imprisonment for a term up to one year or fine.
“Though the petitioner has completed and awarded post-graduate degree by Shivaji University, he is not entitled to practise as a post-graduate doctor,” Dorkar stated in his petition filed through advocate Pooja Thorat. NEWSLINIK

Teenagers get pregnant to get FREE dental care
No one would say being a single mom is easy. Especially being a single, teenage mother.
But the State of Texas appears to be encouraging teenage girls to become pregnant so they can receive free dental care under Medicaid.
Our investigation last year found hundreds of millions of dollars of taxpayer money spent for free braces on kids’ teeth under Medicaid. That spurred a federal investigation, because cosmetic braces aren’t supposed to be paid for under Medicaid.
If that is an example of good intentions gone bad, Latricia Banks and her mom, Patricia Jones, may exemplify a good idea gone terribly wrong. MORE HERE

“Our education system has started dumping sub-standard specimens on the unsuspecting public. It has come to a stage wherein before going to to a doctor or a dentist, we should first ascertain as to from which college he has obtained the degree,” he said.
“It is alarming to note that in matrimonial columns, prospective brides and bridegrooms qualify their degrees with the epithet ‘in merit seat’. MORE HERE

Orthodontic movement of upper central incisor with fractured roots that are intraradicularly united with an endodontic instrument: A follow-up. Radiographic observations on root fractures (Orthod Waves-Jpn Ed 2011; 70(2):134–143)
A patient under orthodontic upper first premolar extraction treatment of Angle Class II, Division 1, malocclusion suffered traumatic multiple fractures of the root of the maxillary right central incisor. The fractured rootswere intraradicularly united with an endodontic instrument (reamer) and then subjected to orthodontic movement. The attempt to improve occlusion by
means of ‘‘intraradicular uniting and immediate orthodontic movement’’has achieved a fairly good treatment outcome. This report addresses radiographic observations of the changes that
occurred to the maxillary right central incisor during the orthodontic movement and discusses the significance and the issues of this procedure.
After the orthodontic movement, the treated tooth maintained a stable occlusion and healthy mastication with no excessive mobility. Radiographic findings in root fracture were that the interposition of connective tissue was the modality of healing, and radiolucency was present in the root apex. Even when extraction of the tooth becomes unavoidable in the future, the stable occlusion and healthy anatomy of the alveolar ridge of the extraction site can be maintained, which will provide favorable conditions for implant and prosthetic treatment.

Best pain relief- the new method
A new study has found that using placebos together with a distraction that would keep a brain engaged – like a puzzle – in order to provide pain relief, can help a patient and the two methods don’t interfere with each other.
Using neuroimaging, scientists had seen that when applying a placebo, there was activity in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. That’s the part of the brain that controls high-level cognitive functions like working memory and attention. It is also the part that is used to do complex tasks like attending to a puzzle. LINK

Dentist challenges tax on braces
India also now has regulation that requires you to pay service tax on orthodontic work fee. (para 1.4.2  Circular http://www.servicetax.com/budgetory2.pdf)
A Chandler dentist is fighting the city’s effort to collect sales taxes on Invisalign braces, arguing that they are prosthetic medical devices not subject to tax and that he is being unfairly targeted.
Dr. Stephen Hunsaker e-mailed City Councilman Jeff Weninger to complain, but a municipal auditor is defending the investigation, saying it came out of one of his office’s routine efforts to find and collect unreported taxes. Hunsaker, who opened Aspen Orthodontics at 3980 E. Riggs Road in 2003, said he has retained an attorney and declined to discuss the dispute. LINK
