Shocking death in Saudi after tooth pain, dental team passports confiscated
The Health Affairs department in Jazan has opened an investigation into the cause of death. Acting spokesman of the department Hussain Maashi said the passports of the members of the medical and technical team which dealt with the case had been confiscated.
Ali Aman Al-Bishi, father of the dead man, recalled that his son, Aman, died after he had written letters to the director of Baish general hospital and the director of the health affairs department in Jazan, asking them to help his son. “Destiny was faster. My son died an hour later,” he said.
The father said last Tuesday his son felt pain in one of his teeth, so he took his mother and went to the health care center in Baish. “He was referred to the dental section. He went there on foot around 3 p.m. The doctor prescribed an injection, which a nurse administered him. He immediately went into a coma and his heart stopped,” the father said.
He added that the emergency doctor was summoned and he and the other doctors gave his son several electric shocks to which the heart responded. His son began to breathe again but was still in a critical condition. “My son was then referred to King Fahd Central Hospital in Jazan where he was admitted to the intensive care unit,” Al-Bishi said.
The father recalled that before his son was referred to the general hospital, two of the dentists dealing with his toothache had entered into a heated discussion. One dentist accused the other of working without a conscience. “Next day I received a call from the hospital that my son had died,” he said tearfully. LINK

Reader Response to MDS fraud
In response to mds scam, i would like to share that all the colleges running PG courses, do they really deserve them called as pg institutes. some of the worst colleges are in udaipur, jaipur, sri ganganagar, bhopal, in ncr, kanpur, lucknow.in punjab. they dont have a opd of more than 2 patients per day , they claim the opd at 500 per day. i dont know why the inspectors come and turn blind eye to this big fraud, people are saying in many cases that dci inspectors are taking 3 lacks per pg seat. all the staff is busy in completing fake records, what do we want to pass to the next generation?? NOTE: DCI is aware of this-why they do not act ? what are they waiting for ? Why DCI does not make whole process totally transparent and also put info on its website like MCI will be doing soon ..LINK

DCI  empowers varsity to raise the bar
The Dental Council of India has written to Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University giving it the power to prescribe higher standards for dental education in the State.
The varsity had petitioned the Council to permit it to enhance the standards of examinations and evaluation in the BDS course above those prescribed by the DCI. The plea was considered by the executive committee of the DCI in its meeting held on January 18 and 19, New Delhi, and the resolution was passed.
There has been widespread criticism of the varsity’s move to up the pass marks in the MBBS and BDS courses throughout the state. The first year exams for MBBS/BDS students are slated to begin on Wednesday. (dental students to get a minimum of 50% in each paper to clear the examination) LINK HERE

Enhance effect of inferior alveolar nerve block
Preoperative oral nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for the success of the inferior alveolar nerve block in irreversible pulpitis treatment
A dosage of 600 to 800 mg of ibuprofen showed a significant effect in increasing the success rate of IANB (relative risk [RR], 1.52; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.17 to 1.98; P = .002), and the results were moderately reliable. A dosage of 75 mg of indomethacin had a significant effect compared to a placebo.
The clinical evidence suggests that pre-emptive oral NSAIDs might have a good effect and are safe in increasing the success rate of IANB, but more studies are necessary to confirm such outcomes. (Quintessence Int 2012;43:209–219)

Free implants to 100 patients
Nearly 100 needy patients will receive their dental implant free of cost in Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences. Half of them were treated on Saturday while the rest will get new teeth implanted on Sunday.
“We have a data bank of patients and we take help from NGOs and other hospitals to figure out patients who cannot pay for the Rs 20,000 to Rs 40,000 treatment,” said Dr Brij Sabaherwal, MAIDS.
The exercise is a part of an annual training module for the postgraduate students of the institute who are trained in dental implants by the American Academy of Implant Dentistry (AAID).
“We do not have a dedicated module in India for this technique of dental care. The help from abroad by trained and established dentists become important in this context,” said Dr Mahesh Verma, director-principal, MAIDS.
He added that the institute carries out implants for selected patients for purely academic purposes, as a part of PG teaching. NEWSLINK

Radiation dose linked to periodontitis after radiotherapy
Radiation dose can influence the development of apical periodontitis in patients undergoing radiotherapy for cancer, according to a study in Clinical Oral Investigations (January 6, 2012).
Researchers from Ghent University analyzed the effect of the radiation dose of oral radiotherapy for cancer on the presence of apical periodontitis in 36 cancer patients without dental prescreening or specific preventive measures.
The panoramic radiographs of these patients were examined for several parameters, including tooth decay and apical periodontitis. The total radiation dose per tooth was determined.

Ornidazole enhances chronic periodontitis treatment
Using ornidazole in conjunction with scaling and root planing achieves significantly better clinical results in treating moderate to advanced chronic periodontitis than periodontal treatment alone, according to a new study in the Journal of Periodontology (January 5, 2012).
Antibiotics such as lincosamides (clindamycin), macrolides (spiramycin, clarithromycin), penicillins (amoxicillin with clavulanic acid), and tetracyclines (doxycycline) have been used in the past as effective adjuncts for treating various forms of periodontitis, according to the researchers, from the Government Dental College and Research Institute in Bangalore, India.
Metronidazole, an antimicrobial agent belonging to the 5-nitroimidazole group, alone or combined with amoxicillin has been used successfully in treating chronic periodontitis. Ornidazole is another antibiotic that belongs to the 5-nitroimidazole group with comparable or better antibacterial properties, according to the study authors.

Missed’ calls that empty your wallet
If you are in the habit of returning missed calls from unidentified numbers, it’s time to put such instincts on hold.
An international crime cartel involved in lottery scams rakes in the money when you call back on these premium numbers, which generally originate abroad. In some cases, even official service providers connive to hatch a revenue sharing plot.
But it has alarmingly come to light lately that these dubious operators can even clone SIM cards simply when one calls them back. That done, they reprogramme a separate handset with the unique electronic serial number of the caller’s phone and make calls at the expense of the latter. MORE HERE
