We will not be able to share seats,” said the dean of a private dental college on condition of anonymity. Even among the 37 government seats, counseling is conducted only for seven dentists as the government gives 18 seats to the all-India quota and nine seats to BDS doctors working for government hospitals. Deemed universities offer an additional 200 PG seats. “In all, only seven students get a fair admission in the entire process,” said Dr George Paul, a Salem-based dentist who has been fighting corruption in the education system for decades seeking information under the RTI Act and moving courts. It was shocking to know that DCI which is busy in increasing MDS seats, even arguing to waive the State Govt. NOC is ignorant about selling seats. Furthermore the onus is shelved on to State Govt and Universities.(Pl.see the links about DCI president’s statements on increasing Seats and times expose of selling seats) Want only Power not responsibility? Now it is obvious as to whose interests DCI represents!

Copy your way to success in PG entrance to get MDS- You think of only GOVT to blame
Malpractice will become near impossible in the Postgraduate Entrance Examination (PGET) set to be conducted at eight centres in the City this Sunday.
RGUHS has made it “extremely difficult” for students to indulge in copying in PGET, the entrance examination for admission to medical and dental courses.
In 2011, nine candidates who took the test at the Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS), Bellary, secured top ranks, shocking the entire State.
PGET will be held only in Bangalore, Closed Circuit Television (CCTVs) cameras will be installed in each examination hall. Biometric attendance systems, too, will be used to curb impersonation. More HERE

Govt Dentist gets permission from high court to appear for PGET
The petitioners (Dentist working at Koratagere in Tumkur ) complained that though they applied for PGET-2012 in time through the competent authority (district health officer), RGUHS did not upload their hall tickets till January 24 saying that though online applications were received, the applications sent through the department were not yet received. Dentists warned not to mislead public
New guidance aimed at ensuring that advertising by dental professionals is clear and never misleads the public, has been issued by the General Dental Council (GDC) today.
The guidance covers all forms of promotion of services by dental professionals in print and on the internet.
It also guides dental professionals on appropriate use of specialist titles. Specifically, dental care professionals (DCPs) must not imply they have specialist status by giving themselves a title with ‘specialist’ in it.
Only those dentists who are on one of the 13 specialist lists held by the GDC may describe themselves as being a specialist, eg: orthodontists. MORE HERE
How to prevent nickel-titanium rotary instrument fracture
With the increased use of nickel-titanium (NiTi) rotary instruments for root canal preparation in endodontics, instrument fracture has become more prevalent. Extensive research has been conducted on the physical properties and mechanical characteristics of NiTi rotary instruments, as well as the factors that can contribute to instrument failure. NiTi rotary instruments are subjected to torque and are susceptible to cyclic fatigue, which are the main causes of instrument fracture. However, with an understanding of how these instruments function in preparing root canals and by applying ways to reduce torque-generated metal fatigue, clinicians can use the instruments safely in clinical practice.

Dagga and oral sex pose teen cancer risk
THE prevalence of oral sex and dagga (Cannabis sativa) use among teenagers is contributing to an alarming increase in mouth and throat cancers, the South African Dental Association (Sada) has said.
Briefing the media in the city this week, Maretha Smit, CEO of Sada, said mouth (oral cancer, OC) and throat cancers (oro-pharyngeal, OP) globally affect up to 400 000 new patients per year. Cancers associated with Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), dagga and hubbly bubbly pipe-smoking occurred mostly in young adults. NEWSLINK

Dentist’s ‘miracle paste’ will keep teeth from falling
A WORCESTER dentist has been awarded a patent after developing a miracle paste which he claims stops people’s teeth falling out.
Worcester dentist Ray Steggles has been awarded a UK patent for his invention for treating bacterial diseases, now called QSIant.
Mr Steggles developed the scientific ideas behind the orange paste during an Open University course in 2004.
The paste, which contains both an antibiotic and a new ingredient which makes the antibiotic more effective at killing the bacteria, is squirted directly onto an area of the mouth where bone density is at its lowest.
The treatment was first used in March 2007 on a patient who had such bad gum disease it appeared a tooth was beyond the help of conventional treatment but, thanks to the paste, the tooth was saved, as reported in your Worcester News on Saturday, April 12, 2008. LINK
New Antibacterial mouthwash
The mouthwash contains antimicrobial peptides that eliminate only the harmful S mutans. Twelve patients who rinsed just one time with the experimental mouthwash experienced a nearly complete elimination of the S. mutans bacteria over a four-day testing period. Based on the success of this clinical trial Dr. Shi’s company has filed a drug application with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, to begin more extensive clinical trials in March. Oral Cancer Breakthrough From Raspberries and Old Breast Cancer Therapy
First breakthrough was the creation of an oral gel based on anthocyanins, powerful antioxidants found in black raspberries. Study results showed that the gel, when applied to the mouth, would suppress genes associated with functions that allow cancerous cells to grow, thus diminishing the risk for recurring lesions.

Jawbones are ‘shaped by diet’, a study finds
For years we have been teaching, soft diet leads to small jaws and crooked teeth. Now here is evidence from this study.
The study has shown that jaws grew shorter and broader as humans took on a more pastoral lifestyle.
“This is a fascinating study which challenges the common perception that there has been little recent change in the morphology of humans,” said anthropologist Jay Stock from the University of Cambridge.
Many scientists have suggested that the range of skull shapes that exist within our species is the result of exposure to different climates, while others have argued that chance played more of a role in creating the diversity we see in people’s profiles.
The new data, collected from over 300 skulls, across 11 populations, shows that jaws shortened and widened as humans moved from hunting and gathering to a more sedentary way of life. MORE HERE

High heels may cause permanent damage to leg muscles
Scientists from The Griffith University in Queensland, Australia found that by constantly forcing a foot into a ‘plantarflexed’ position, or downwardly pointed toes, women are changing their walking behaviour – at the risk of causing permanent damage to leg muscles.
According to New York Times, for this study a group of heel lovers were compared with a control group of women, all of whom were aged between late teens and early 30s, who rarely wear heels.
The women were asked to walk along a 26-foot runway specially underlaid with sensors. They monitored the varying forces of each foot on the ground as well as the action of joints and muscles.
The results found that even when walking in flats, regular high-heel wearers – those who have worn a 2 inch plus heel for more than 40 hours a week over the preceding two years – have a neuromechanically adapted style of walking to that of non-heel wearers.
Flat shoe wearers look longer strides, using their tendons to walk rather than overly engaging their calves. NEWSLINK
Gene linked to Osteoporosis Drugs complications Identified
Researchers at the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine have identified a genetic variation that raises the risk of developing serious necrotic jaw bone lesions in patients who take bisphosphonates, a common class of osteoclastic inhibitors. The discovery paves the way for a genetic screening test to determine who can safely take these drugs. The study appears in the online version of the journal The Oncologist. LINK
