Action assured against colleges who are selling MDS seats
Medical fraternity said they were shocked how the government could be blind to such blatant corruption. Dental Council of India (DCI) president Dr Dibyendu Mazumdar said the council could stall the admission process and prevent students from writing their first semester examinations if illegal admissions were made. “But it has to be referred to us by the university or the state government,” Dr Mazumdar said.
The TN Dr MGR Medical University, which registers students joining dental and medical courses, has failed to check if these students satisfied the criteria laid down by the DCI. Vice-chancellor Dr Mayil Vahanan Natarajan said, “We weren’t aware of this. But now, we will ensure we initiate action against each of these colleges,” he said. (He was not aware- is it a joke ?) NOTE:ONLY way out is that admission should be done by neutral or impartial body, OR let all admissions be done via national entrance TEST

CBI-MCI teams raid Andhra Medical colleges
Teams of the Central Bureau of Investigation and the Medical Council of India (MCI) have been conducting surprise raids on private medical colleges across the AP state
Sources said the CBI has gathered specific information against some private medical colleges during its investigations since April 2010 when it arrested the then MCI chairman Ketan Desai on charges of accepting bribes to approve medical colleges. Sources said that the CBI teams have been investigating whether the managements have resorted to irregularities like bribing MCI officials to obtain approval for MBBS and PG seats. They said the teams had five members from the CBI and two from the MCI. There are also complaints that the managements have started ‘advance booking’ for sale of MBBS and PG medical seats for the coming academic year 2012-13, though the rules stipulate that admissions can start only after the government issues the notification for filling seats. Oral cancer virus affects 7 percent of Americans
About 16 million Americans have oral HPV, a sexually transmitted virus more commonly linked with cervical cancer that also can cause mouth cancer, according to the first nationwide estimate.
HPV — human papilloma virus — is increasingly recognized as a major cause of oral cancers affecting the back of the tongue and tonsil area. Smoking and heavy drinking are also key causes.
Until now, it was not known how many people have oral HPV infections.
Overall, 7 percent of Americans aged 14 to 69 are infected, the study found. And while the viruses can be found in saliva, HPV appears to be mostly spread through sex, rather than more casual contact such as kissing, according to the study in today’s Journal of the American Medical Association. Orthodontists under investigation for fraud
The Texas Attorney General’s (AG) office is investigating 31 orthodontists for possible Medicaid fraud, according to testimony by David Maxwell, deputy director of law enforcement for the AG’s office, before the state’s House Public Health Committee.
The controversy stems from the fact that spending on braces jumped from $102 million in 2008 to $185 million in 2010, and youngsters who typically see their orthodontist an average of 12 times a year saw them 22 times in fiscal 2010, reported the Dallas Morning News.
Some 24% of the nearly 80,000 children who last year received orthodontic services from Medicaid were younger than age 12. LINK

Saliva HIV test as good as blood test: Study
A Canadian study evaluated the accuracy of a widely used saliva test for HIV and found it to be comparable to traditional blood testing.
Researchers from McGill University in Montreal and Queen’s University in Kingston, Ont., along with others, conducted a so-called meta-analysis, comparing data from previous studies conducted all over the world.
They found that the OraQuick HIV1/2 saliva test is 99% accurate for diagnosing HIV in high-risk populations, and about 97% in low-risk populations.
“Getting people to show up for HIV testing at public clinics has been difficult because of visibility, stigma, lack of privacy and discrimination. A confidential testing option such as self-testing could bring an end to the stigmatization associated with HIV testing,” said Dr. Nitika Pant Pai, the study’s lead author.
Pant Pai’s work is supported by a Grand Challenges Canada Rising Star in Global Health award. The findings were published Tuesday in the journal The Lancet Infectious Diseases.

Osteoporosis drug ingredient found useful against periodontitis
Alendronate, an aminobisphosphonate, is capable of inhibiting periodontitis associated osteoclastic activity and hence is effective in protecting the alveolar bone in periodontitis. In the present study, we explored the efficacy of local delivery of alendronate on the alveolar bone following mucoperiosteal flap surgery. This is the first study to use polymer impregnated gel based delivery of alendronate.
A total of 15 patients with chronic periodontitis in the age group of 35 – 55 years, of both sexes, with pocket depth of ≥ 5mm and radiographic evidence of identical osseous defects in the mandibular molar region bilaterally were included in this prospective study. A gel based drug delivery system of Alendronate was formulated. Following surgical flap debridement, 0.1 ml alendronate gel and 0.1 ml placebo gel was placed at the experimental and control sites respectively. Clinical and radiographic parameters were recorded at baseline, three months and six months post surgery.
Alendronate was more effective in improving clinical and radiographic parameters compared to placebo.FULL PAPER

Dental First aid kit

A general practitioner from Hof, Germany, has developed a first-aid kit that enables people to treat dental emergencies themselves when they cannot see a dentist straight away. The kit consists of nine items and can only be purchased online.

“Every sports club, school, company, household, outdoor athlete and car driver—even cyclists—should have such a kit,” Dr Ulrich Reiß recommended. After several years of research and planning, the dentist recently introduced the dental-aid kit—apparently, the first one worldwide. MORE HERE
