The students further confirming how merit is sacrificed at the altar of money power. An entrance examination for a PG dental course is all a sham, its money that speaks.
One seat for Rs 35 lakh, that is the price expected of you if you have to pass a private dental entrance exam in Tamil Nadu. Dr Ramachandran, principal of one such college in Chennai caught on hidden camera demanding capitation fees and calling the entrance exam a mere eyewash and just a formality. LINK HERE
Do we have hope that DCI and Govt can do justice to merit students ?

Oral sex with partner with genital warts increases risk of cancer
MANILA, Philippines—Health and dental experts warned Filipinos on Tuesday, that oral sex with a partner with genital warts could increase the risk of cancer even more than smoking and drinking.
The finding linking a virus that causes genital warts to oral cancer was tackled at a recent joint scientific conference of the Philippine Medical Association (PMA) and the Philippine Dental Association (PDA) as part of this year’s celebration of National Cancer Consciousness Week.
People who have had more than five oral sex partners were nine times more likely to have cancer of the tonsils, tongue or throat, said the PMA, referring to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
In a statement on Tuesday, the PMA cited studies showing that the human papilloma virus (HPV), mainly responsible for cervical cancer among women, could also cause oral cancer in both men and women who have been engaging in unprotected oral sex. NEWSLINK

Placement woes for UK Dentists
The news from the Committee of Postgraduate Dental Deans & Directors (COPDEND) claims ‘success’ in allocating 927 places among the 1,109 candidates who attended for interviews. Of the 182 (16%) with no place, 133 are on a ‘reserve list’ who may get a training place. The remaining 49, the output of one UK dental school are thrown on the scrap heap.
Back in 2004, the then government announced that 185 extra dentists would be trained each year. Now that they have qualified, this government is telling 182 of them that there is no job for them in NHS dentistry. At an estimated cost of £250,000 per student, it has cost the UK taxpayer £15.4 million for each dentist joining the NHS. MORE HERE

Why MBA for dentists ?
Indian Institute of Management, Trichy’s, Dr Kishor Chindam, who has done his bachelors in dental surgery (BDS) from the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, said that with the current opportunities in healthcare management in the country, an MBA seemed to be the way forward. Almost the same reason why Dr Shashank Prabhu decided to do an MBA. Having interned at a government hospital, he felt that MBA was necessary to change the way hospitals and the healthcare industry functioned in the country.  MORE HERE

Dentinal tubule infection- cause of late endodontic failure
Longitudinal sections of the apical root specimen revealed a heavy dentinal tubule infection surrounding the area of the lateral canal. Bacteria were not found in any other area of the specimen. No other possible reason for the inflammatory periradicular lesion, such as root fracture, coronal leakage, or foreign-body reaction, was evident. Conclusions: A persistent intraradicular infection caused by bacteria located within dentinal tubules is the most reasonable explanation for resurgence of the apical periodontitis lesion. This case report stresses the importance of attaining proper disinfection of the root canal system for a predictable long-term outcome of the treatment. (J Endod2012;38: 250–254)

Women feel tooth pain more intensely ?
Using a vast database of electronic medical records, researchers at the Stanford School of Medicine were able to show “to a high level of statistical significance” that women report feeling pain more intensely than men regardless of the source of such pain, according to a medical school press release. The study is published on Jan. 23 in the Journal of Pain.
A pain score ranges from zero to 10, a number that represents how patients respond when asked to rank the intensity of their pain. Zero indicates if one reports “no pain,” while 10 indicates “worse than imaginable” pain. MORE HERE

Anatomical guidelines for insertion of mini implants
Risk factors can be avoided by using “rootless areas” such as the hard palate, the maxillary tuberosity, or the portions of the zygomatic arches adjacent to the maxilla. The tuberosity cannot be regarded as entirely safe, since unerupted third molars or thick layers of gingiva may prevent successful insertion. Insertion into the inferior portion of the zygomatic arch carries the risk of perforating the maxillary sinus. Therefore, the only safe alternatives to buccal miniscrew placement are in the palate. How good are all ceramic restorations ?
A study of 1,335 all-ceramic restorations placed between 1987 and 2009 has found that they are both predictable and reliably successful, with a 93.5% probability of survival over a 10-year period (International Journal of Prosthodontics, January/February 2012, Vol. 25:1, pp. 70-78).
Success rates remained strong over time. The estimated survival rate was 97.3% at five years, 96% at eight years, 94% at 10 years, 85.8% at 15 years, and 78.5% after 20 years. Nearly half of the failures occurred in the first eight years, the researchers noted.
While the entire study included 1,335 all-ceramic restorations, 69 failures took place prior to the 2010 examination, so 1,266 were considered. Of these, 26 were rated not acceptable and unsatisfactory when evaluated.
