Dental College ? better call them Degree mills
The revised results for the dental college students who come under the affiliation of the Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University have come as a shocker to the students as the original pass percentage has dropped even lower after the new results were announced.
It is well known in academic circles how students are given full attendance/ marks in internals. Most private institutions know that is is not good business policy to have backlogs, in addition parents rush to a college with their child who assures them a degree in five years.

How about dental college training you to be Call center executive
At 6 pm every evening, Abhishek Chaitanya steps out of his house in Thippasandra, Bangalore, and into a glassfronted building that houses the offices of a technology MNC and its BPO unit. Chaitanya, 27, walks in, goes to his desk and dons the traditional gear of his tribe: a high-end headpiece that gives him crystal-clear quality during calls. There’s nothing out of the ordinary here except that Chaitanya is a dentist by qualification. Lack of good jobs and his inability to start private practice pushed him to become a call centre executive. LINK

Dental College salary issues- Will DCI protect staff members ?
Staff at Maitri Dental College , Durg (Chhattisgarh). I haven’t been paid since 5 months. Purvanchal Dental College, Gorakhpur staff has not been paid for three months. They cant leave college now otherwise will loose work experience. Management is more interested in starting pg courses in the college without funds but are not paying staff members. Dental Council should have some control over the issue of staff salary payment as well.
NOTE: It is sad that we are a divided lot, no college can run without faculty and yet many faculty have to be on management’s mercy. Are we such selfish bunch of people ?

Er:YAG lasers effective in debonding porcelain veneers
Er:YAG laser irradiation can effectively debond porcelain veneers while preserving tooth structure, according to a study in Lasers in Surgery and Medicine (December 2011, Vol. 43:10, pp. 965-974).
Using Er:YAG lasers to remove porcelain veneers has not been previously described in the scientific literature, according to the study authors, from the University of California, San Francisco School of Dentistry.
The study authors bonded 24 veneers to freshly extracted and prepared incisors, then determined how much laser energy was necessary for debonding and debonded the veneers with the laser. They measured the time needed for total debonding and used light microscopy to assess any damage to the underlying tooth structure.
Bad dental health can lead to pneumonia, Yale study suggests
Thousands of elderly people are at increased risk of pneumonia this winter if they fail to brush their teeth regularly, a study suggests.
Dr Samit Joshi of Yale University School of Medicine found changes in bacteria in the mouth preceded the development of pneumonia.
He concluded that this process “suggests that changes in oral bacteria play a role in the risk for developing pneumonia”.
Pneumonia is thought to affect more than 620,000 people in the UK and claims the lives of around five per cent of those who contract the disease. MORE HERE

The Mouth Offers Clues to Disorders and Disease; Dentists Could Play Larger Role in Patient Care
The eyes may be the window to the soul, but the mouth provides an even better view of the body as a whole.
Some of the earliest signs of diabetes, cancer, pregnancy, immune disorders, hormone imbalances and drug issues show up in the gums, teeth and tongue—sometimes long before a patient knows anything is wrong.
There’s also growing evidence that oral health problems, particularly gum disease, can harm a patient’s general health as well, raising the risk of diabetes, heart disease, stroke, pneumonia and pregnancy complications.
“We have lots of data showing a direct correlation between inflammation in the mouth and inflammation in the body,” says Anthony Iacopino, director of the International Centre for Oral-Systemic Health, which opened at the University of Manitoba Faculty of Dentistry in Canada in 2008. MORE HERE
Dental clinic can be valuable in screening for Chronic illness
Nearly 20 million Americans annually visit a dentist but not a general healthcare provider, according to an NYU study published in the American Journal of Public Health.
The study, conducted by a nursing-dental research team at NYU, is the first of its kind to determine the proportion of Americans who are seen annually by a dentist but not by a general healthcare provider.
This finding suggests dentists can play a crucial role as health care practitioners in the front-line defense of identifying systemic disease which would otherwise go undetected in a significant portion of the population, say the researchers. MORE HERE
