High court’s blasts MCI over merchandising of medical education
Expressing concern over the ‘merchandisation’ of medical education, the Delhi high court, on Thursday, slammed the Medical Council of India (MCI) for not doing enough to ensure that more colleges also resulted in improved health care in the country. The court warned that in the midst of unbridled mushrooming of medical colleges, the quality of teaching faculty, infrastructure etc was being ignored.
“It is time for the MCI to reinvigorate the system to stop unequal growth of mediocre colleges aimed at commercialisation of medical education,” said said Justice Kailash Gambhir. NEWSLINK
Search warrant – for Orthodontist office- by Attorney General
Representatives from the Ohio Attorney General’s Office served a search warrant today on the dental office of Dr. G. Thomas Noakes, 1121 Niles Cortland Road, Howland, as part of an investigation.
That action came after Dr. Noakes signed a consent agreement with the Ohio State Dental Board in which he admitted that between July 2003 and February 2007, he permitted three dental assistants to take X-rays when Dr. Noakes knew that the assistants did not possess a valid license to do so.
Dr. Noakes also admitted that between October 2004 and May 2006, he allowed a dental assistant to bond orthodontic brackets and cement orthodontic bands, something only dentists are authorized to do, the dental board said in a document. MORE HERE
Australian Dentists under investigation for fraud- face threat of bankruptcy
MEDICARE is investigating hundreds of dentists over possible misuse of government funds as it attempts to recoup almost $20 million of unaccounted benefits paid in the past four years.
Minutes from a meeting of an Australian Dental Association branch, obtained by the Herald, warn the investigation could force dentists into bankruptcy and indicate the association’s NSW branch is setting aside funds for a possible legal battle.
The Herald understands the huge investigation has uncovered instances where dentists have billed Medicare for work that was never done, or failed to prepare any paperwork explaining what treatment was conducted.
Medicare has identified 626 dentists for overuse of the Chronic Disease Dental Scheme – 298 of them in NSW – but has completed only 60 investigations. Almost a third had failed to comply with the requirements of the scheme.MORE HERE

HIV could be reduced to a “minor chronic infection” akin to herpes, scientists developing a new vaccine have claimed.
Spanish researchers found that 22 out of 24 healthy people developed an immune response to HIV after being given the MVA-B vaccine.
The study showed that almost three-quarters of participants had developed HIV-specific antibodies 11 months after vaccination. More than a third developed a type of T cell that fights HIV, called CD4+, while more than two thirds developed another, called CD8+.
Overall, 92 per cent developed some sort of immune response. Prof Esteban acknowledged the vaccine was at an early stage, describing it as promising. But if it passed clinical trials and made it into production in the future HIV could be compared to herpes virus nowadays, a minor chronic infection that only resulted in disease when the immune system was otherwise compromised. Rogue applications have been something of a bother for consumers and vendors alike in 2011. Google had to deal with a tonne of malicious applications finding their way onto the Android Market earlier this year.
Pesky crooks are trying to get their hands on smartphone users’ data and money, uploading their dirty apps onto marketplaces and just waiting for consumers to fall into their traps.
There are a number of organisations trying to protect users, of course. Premium rate regulator Phonepayplus is one such body, looking out for apps that sneakily get users to pay for premium rate services without them knowing it.
