Restoration of Endodontically treated teeth: Secrets of Success
Preservation of tooth integrity and strength is important for the long-term survival of endodontically treated teeth. Endodontic treatment and post space preparation requires reduction of the remaining supportive tooth structure. Restorative modalities following root canal therapy must provide sufficient strength for the prosthetic material and tooth structures. This article presents seven key factors that should be taken into consideration to ensure clinical success when restoring an endodontically treated tooth. FULL PAPER
Now Periodontal Tissue Formed on Titanium Dental Implants JDR Feb 2011
Analyses of recovered implants revealed organized PDL tissues surrounding titanium implant surfaces in PDL-cell-seeded, and not in unseeded control, implants. Rat PDL DPCs also exhibited differentiative potential characteristic of stem cells. These proof-of-principle findings suggest that PDL DPCs can organize periodontal tissues in the jaw, at the site of previously lost teeth, indicating that this method holds potential as an alternative approach to osseointegrated dental implants. Further refinement of this approach will facilitate the development of clinically relevant methods for autologous PDL regeneration on titanium implants in humans. LINK

Faculty crisis in US Dental schools
A team of researchers from seven U.S. dental schools is calling for quick and creative solutions to address the growing scarcity of full-time faculty members within the nation’s dental school programs (Journal of Dental Education, January 2011, Vol. 75:1, pp. 82-89).
Their report cites widening pay gaps between private practice dentists and clinical professors at dental schools as one factor in fewer dentists committing to careers in teaching. Clinical faculty also report being overwhelmed and burned out by the workload demands of teaching, clinical, research, and administrative responsibilities. LINK
Cone beam for every orthodontic patient, at what cost ?
Some orthodontists may be exposing young patients to unnecessary radiation when they order 3-D X-ray imaging for simple orthodontic cases before considering traditional 2-D imaging, suggests a paper published by University of Michigan faculty.
A very small number of orthodontists utilize the 3-D imaging on a routine basis when developing a treatment plan, and this raises concerns of unnecessary radiation exposure. In contrast, the evidence summarized in Kapila’s paper suggests that 2-D imaging would suffice in most routine orthodontic cases. One of the tradeoffs for the superb 3-D images is higher radiation exposure, Kapila said. MORE HERE
3M uses TV show to promotes Incognito braces

Unlike other styles, Incognito hidden braces are fitted behind the teeth, 3M noted. They are also the only fixed, lingual braces that are 100% customized to each patient’s specific orthodontic situation. LINK
Antimicrobial activity of different endodontic sealers
Zinc oxide eugenol based root canal sealer produced largest inhibitory zones followed in decreasing order by epoxy resin based sealer and least by calcium hydroxide based root canal sealer. Zinc oxide eugenol based root canal sealer showed continued inhibitory effect for periods up to 7days/15 days, respectively (presence of eugenol and continuous release of formaldehyde).
AH 26 exhibited zones of bacterial growth inhibition, at all time intervals, but a lesser growth inhibition in comparison with endomethasone.
Apexit – no antimicrobial activity against four of the test microorganisms tested – E. faecalis, E. coli, P. aeruginosa, and B. fragilis. Very little antimicrobial effect against S. aureus, Streptococcus and Peptostreptococcus strains. FULL PAPER
Ancient Body Clock Discovered
The mechanism that controls the internal 24-hour clock of all forms of life from human cells to algae has been identified by scientists.
Not only does the research provide important insight into health-related problems linked to individuals with disrupted clocks — such as pilots and shift workers — it also indicates that the 24-hour circadian clock found in human cells is the same as that found in algae and dates back millions of years to early life on Earth.
