The ABCs of Advertising

Advertising is a profession, and if you’ve heard me speak or read my book, you know that I always suggest hiring a professional to create your advertising.

However, while it’s better to leave the design and creation of your ads to the pros, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t know some basic advertising tips. After all, without an understanding of what makes an ad effective, you’ll have no way of evaluating whether your advertising material should be sent out into the world…or back to the drawing board. To do this, I suggest you “Remember your ABCs” and apply them to every ad you run.  FULL PAPER

Effect of curing time on the bond strength of a bracket-bonding system

EJO July 2010

The purpose of this study was to assess the influence of two light units, a light-emitting diode (LED) and a plasma arc light (PAC), on the shear bond strength (SBS) of brackets bonded to enamel.

The LED at 5 seconds and the PAC at 3 seconds provided sufficient mean SBS to resist either orthodontic or masticatory forces.

Procedures Of Endoscopic Periradicular Surgery

Quintessence International, July/August 2010

When a tooth with an apical lesion is identified, an apicoectomy is frequently performed when nonsurgical treatment is considered unfeasible or has previously failed. However, the treatment is usually difficult in molars. This article describes a minimally invasive procedure for removing a gutta-percha point under the maxillary sinus mucosa using an ultrathin arthroscope and a visualization approach in apicoectomy using an intranasal endoscope. These surgical techniques using endoscopes are minimally invasive and reliable procedures that provide limited incision and bone removal and respect the integrity of the maxillary sinus. Association between periodontal disease, bacterial vaginosis, and sexual risk behaviours Journal of Clinical Periodontology July 2010

Twenty-eight per cent of women with bacterial vaginosis had periodontal disease compared with 22% without , corresponding to 1.29 (95% CI: 1.13, 1.47) times greater risk of periodontal disease among women with bacterial vaginosis. In adjusted analysis the risk ratio dropped to 1.23 (95% CI: 1.08, 1.40). Receptive oral sex with an uncircumcised partner was associated with 1.28 times (95% CI: 0.97, 1.69) the risk for periodontal disease compared with receptive oral sex with a circumcised partner, though the association is not statistically significant.

Conclusions: In this population, there is a small but significant association between periodontal disease and bacterial vaginosis and a possible trend between receptive oral sex with an uncircumcised partner and periodontal disease.

Periodontal Regeneration With Limited Orthodontics for the Treatment of 2- or 3-Wall Infrabony Defects Journal of Clinical Periodontology July 2010

Limited orthodontics has been shown to be effective in the correction of infrabony defects. Studies have also demonstrated the efficacy of using enamel matrix derivative (EMD) with demineralized freeze-dried bone allograft (DFDBA) to treat infrabony defects. This study aimed to compare the clinical efficacy of limited orthodontics combined with EMD/DFDBA in the treatment of 2- or 3-wall infrabony defects.

47 patients were analyzed. Both treatment groups showed a significant improvement from baseline with no significant difference between the groups except for the 2-wall defects. OED (Ortho/EMD/DFDBA) group had statistically significant OPAL (open probing attachment ) gain (95% CI 3.18 to 4.36; P = 0.036) compared to ED group (95% CI 2.26 to 3.24) in 2-wall defects.

Conclusion: While both treatment modalities were effective in managing 2- or 3-wall infrabony defects, limited orthodontics provided an additional benefit to EMD/DFDBA in 2-wall defects.
