Towards Everlasting Peace

When I joined dentistry twenty-five years ago, I could never have imagined that I would venture into the path of alternative therapy. What I started as an alternative method to tackle physical ailments without the use of allopathic medicines, soon proved to be a means to attain spiritual realisation.

Yes, Reiki, which is fast becoming popular as an alternative therapy, heals one physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually by constant, dedicated practice.

Every living being is endowed with a self-healing capacity. This healing energy is present in abundance in the Universe. A person who has been initiated by a qualified Reiki teacher can channel this healing energy in large quantities for self healing and healing others.

As Reiki teacher, I have given Reiki treatment to many people. For each person, when I pass on the healing energy, I get a different insight into his or her life-style.

Majority of my patients are Indians. As Indians, we have the legacy of compassion and tolerance. When I got a chance to give Reiki for a foreigner, I was taken aback by the hard, cold stony feeling in his heart area (although my subsequent foreign patients didn't give such a feeling). I explained to him what I felt and that it was related to relationships. He thought for a while and agreed, 'Yes, I find it difficult to accept love. I am not very compassionate'.

From birth, we Indians try to instill some amount of spirituality into our children. This helps them at moments of crisis and it also helps them to let go of things when need arises.

During my visit to Sweden, I found that many Swedes have developed an inclination for spiritual awareness. It is a very welcome trend. Because ultimately, what is it that men seek in life? It is happiness and peace. The common mistake we all do is to seek happiness outside- through materialistic things, relationships and achievements.

Happiness can be from things that we are programmed to do- like sleep. It is also derived from external things like eating good food according to one's taste, or having an understanding and loving spouse.

It is interesting to see that we won't be able to live without the former (sleep), but one can definitely spend a lifetime on a bland diet or without an understanding partner (look around you for example!).

An unripe fruit is devoid of the inherent sweetness in a ripe fruit. If we want to make the unripe fruit sweet, we can cover it with sugar syrup. But if that unripe fruit is allowed to ripen naturally, the inherent sweetness manifests.

We try to achieve happiness from external things. But this is not permanent. If we allow ourselves to mature internally with proper knowledge and habits, we start experiencing the flow of happiness from our heart.

How can we achieve this maturity and from where can we obtain the knowledge? Luckily, we don't have to search for these. We have to just prepare our inner-selves ready to receive this divine knowledge. The moment you are ready, you will see the source of knowledge appearing before you - either in the form of a book or a Guru(teacher).

Now we come to the ultimate question, how can we prepare ourselves? There are multiple paths to achieve this. Through Reiki insight, I have come across a simple type of meditation that has proven to be effective for intellectual type of people. It is based on the fact that our physical bodies are not us! We say 'my head', 'my nose', 'my body' etc., Concentrate on the latter- 'my body'. Whose body? The body belongs to someone else, the body is not you.

The physical body is made of five elements- earth, water, fire, ether and air. When a child is in the mother's womb, as long as it is properly connected to the mother's body, it is alive. On birth, this connection is snapped and it starts its own life with its first breath. That component in its first breath, the vibrant, pulsating component of 'air' is the real you. Those who cannot digest this concept calls this the 'soul'.

Thus, the life started with the first breath and the body becomes devoid of life with the exhalation of last breath.

The type of meditation, which I got from Reiki insight attempts to make you aware of the 'real you' and watch your body from outside and program the body' actions in tune with Nature's master plan.

For identifying the real you for the first time, the presence of a qualified master is necessary. Alternatively, the master can empower a symbol and give to you. This type of symbol will be person specific i.e., a symbol empowered for you will not be useful for your friend.

Sit cross-legged on a mat on the floor or on a chair with feet touching the floor. Let your palms rest on the thighs. Keep a mirror in front of you. You should be able to see your face and shoulders in the mirror.

Stick the Reiki activated symbol on the mirror in the space corresponding to the space above nose between the eyebrows of your image.

Concentrate on your breathing, Take comfortable deep breaths. Look at your image on the mirror. Look at the shoulders of the image first. See and feel the shoulders relaxing.

Now move your gaze to the face. See and feel the facial muscles relaxing and a peaceful glow emanating from your face. Gaze for sometime at that peaceful face.

Take a deep breath. When you exhale, feel that breath going down and then up (in a semicircle fashion) and entering the Reiki activated symbol at its base.

Now close your eyes. "You" are now residing in that symbol and watching your body. See your body being engulfed in a peaceful cloud of cobalt blue color. Watch any thoughts that are passing by. Just watch them, label them and don't get involved in those thoughts. It is like watching a horse galloping by. Just watch it galloping, don't try to mount it.

Remain passive for as long as (5 to 10 minutes to start with) you feel nice. With proper concentration, if any part of the body is having any problem, you can feel some heaviness or colour change in that part of the body. If you have any stressful situation to deal with in future, imagine and watch your body dealing with that situation in a peaceful and calm manner.

Exhale deeply and slowly, open your eyes. Look at the symbol and while you inhale, see the real you coming out from the top of the symbol, up and then down in a semicircle and entering your forehead in between your eyebrows.

Feel that energy spreading to each and every part of your body, down to the fingertips and tips of toe. Feel the energy, feel the peace, the calmness.

Rub your palms together, open them up. Look at the open palms, touch your face with both the palms. Get up slowly. Sometimes residual energy may linger at the spot between the eyebrows and you may feel the heaviness or vibration there. In that case rub the area with left palm 2-3 times.
