Taperdontics v/s Endodontics

Crown down was a wonderful thing that happened, but some how we got so obsessed with it we thought/were told, that crown down is the end of the world. And now most of us have realized our troubles have not ended and in great many cases we are still facing sleepless nights.

Recent study published in the journal of Gen Dent in Sept-Oct 2007 by By Francis W. Allen clearly demonstrates that with tapered instruments you are able to clean only 18% of the apical
1 mm, it is because of body defenses that we still succeed in 70% cases. To download full paper CLICK HERE

It will be an eye opener and will help you learn better endo, and a better service for your patients. There is another excellent resource on rotary endo CLICK HERE

We urge you not be believe any one blindly, we all have extracted teeth, play around with them, see them under magnification and truth will be revealed to you, and you will see dawn of a new era in your endodontic work.

Remember rotary endo is here to stay, even hand instrument of size larger than 20 leads to canal transportation, be smart and choose smart endodontics.

Oral Health is Mandatory Not Optional

Current research has now established that good Oral health is an asset and several systemic problems can arise due to infected mouth/gums.

There are 41 million diabetics in India, all these people need good oral health care and maintenance, there is an urgent need to educate all the stake holders so that these people can be helped to lead better quality life.

One link that is very important is diabetic link. The FDI World Dental Federation and the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) jointly organised a symposium on Oral Health and Diabetes on 25 October 2007 during the FDI Annual World Dental Congress in Dubai, UAE.

Their recommendations are:
  • To include prevention of oral disease and promotion of oral health as an essential component of diabetes management;
  • To include routine oral screening of people with diabetes;
  • To improve knowledge about the reciprocal link between diabetes and oral health
    among all stakeholders, health professionals, people with diabetes, the public
    and policy makers.

Virtually all of the major systemic disorders are thought to have some sort of inflammatory component and the discovery of the exact mechanisms of inflammation may lead to more effective treatments and lower mortality in the future.

Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory process, so it serves to reason that active periodontal infection may have far reaching consequences beyond the oral cavity as periodontal pathogens gain access to the bloodstream and/or exert their tissue altering inflammatory effects in other organ systems. Now there is also research showing that patients with kidney disorders can benefit from good oral care. Initial findings have also shown that there are more chances of abortion in first 32 weeks if mother has periodontal infection.

When will India be Dental Super power

India has made its place as an IT superpower. What do you think is situation in dental profession? A friend of mine Dr Sanjeev Sharma, who is now a leading dentist in USA, on visit to India remarked "India has failed to market dentistry".

Two observations from him, one that movie goers are now happily paying 150 in multiplex theaters (from 25 before) but dentists are still struggling. Another thing that shocked him was some of his dentist friends had calculus and stains on their front teeth, on being questioned they said "chalta hai". This attitude can not go on it has to change. Now it is well established that oral cavity can spread bacteria in the system round the clock which will damage general health beyond repair, you can see details HERE

Everyone is eying orthodontics, looks like a very lucrative field to practice and train, yes also for research. OrthoAccel's proprietary technology accelerates the changes in bone structure that result from orthodontic treatment. OrthoAccel said its device cuts in half the treatment time required for braces, and can be used with all existing orthodontic bracket technologies. That is "Great smile in Half the time".

The company expects to begin human clinical studies at the University of Texas Dental Branch at Houston in late spring 2008.

Dr Ashok Dhoble is working very hard and using his position as Hon Secretary of Indian Dental Association to do his best for profession. We need to strengthen his hands by making generous financial contributions and support his efforts. He has also launched a special publication for public education "Oral Health" it will be available to all dentists and they can place it in their waiting room.
